I meant to post this a couple weeks ago when it first came up.

The LDS church offered the following official statement regarding the sale of Alco pop in Utah:

Quote:
Statement by the LDS Church on alcopops:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long supported the state of Utah alcohol control philosophy that alcohol be made reasonably available to responsible adults.
The church agrees with the position of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission and the attorney general that the sale of distilled spirits - including so-called alcopops - should be restricted to state liquor stores.
To allow the sale of distilled spirits in grocery and convenience stores promotes underage drinking and undermines the state system of alcohol control. Utah can justifiably take pride in its low rates of per capita consumption of alcohol and its low incidence of drunk driving. The resulting lower social costs from alcohol abuse are a benefit to all Utahns.
- LDS Church spokesman Mark Tuttl

The very next day to M. Russell Ballards credit he urged compassion from the legislature toward undocumented workers. There was no official statement only second hand information from legislators saying what MRB said was:
Quote:
"The anti-immigrant community has become hateful and vilifies all undocumented workers." The LDS leaders said, in essence, "We must remember that we are talking about human beings."

To those fortunate souls that live outside of Zion there are several very narrow bills aimed directly at undocumented workers. So the church offers an official policy statement (marching orders) directing the legislature to quarantine Alco pops at state liquor stores. But offers no official statement on treating people as human beings with compassion and dignity?
Quote:
Officially, church spokesman Scott Trotter said, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints remains neutral on immigration legislation.

Regardless of where any of us stand on the US immigration issue all can agree that people should all be treated with dignity. But the fact that the church would offer an official FP endorsed press release on one issue and be silent on the other... makes little sense to me. I'm sure it's to protect their cherished tax exempt status. I wonder how much tithing receipts would drop off if tax deductions for tithing was eliminated?

This is a step in the right direction, I just wish they would come out and say something similar about gay/lesbian rights legislation. I could say they were making real progress, then.
